The Results Are In!

A note about data collection.  Utilizing the Strategic Planning Committee brainstorm of organizational issues, I normally ask the organization staff to put them into one of the four SWOT categories (strength, weakness, opportunity or threat).  Based on the the SWOT analysis, I form the interview survey and guest survey questions — focusing on the issues that have been brought to light in order to get feedback from a cross-section of the organization.  This confirms what areas are strong, what areas need help, where there are opportunities and how to protect from threats.

I like to have the two surveys given in person.  For the guest survey, I ask guests to fill out an approximately 10-question survey as they are exiting the organization.  Offering an incentive to guests for filling out the survey helps encourage more responses.  For the interview survey, I set up individual appointments to meet one-on-one with Board members, staff, volunteers, and donors to verbally go through the 30-40 question survey for about an hour each.

To collect the responses from the two surveys, I utilize Survey Monkey because responses can easily be entered in and results are generated along with graphs and pie charts.

The Guest Survey Question is:

Which one of the following potential programs at the Nature Center would you be most interested in:

  • Evening or Weekend Lectures
  • Changing Animal Exhibits (examples: insects, frogs)
  • Amphitheater Programs: After-hour concerts
  • Sleepover Programs
  • Amphitheater Programs: Live Animal Programming
  • Toddler Programs
  • Day Camp Program
  • Other (please specify):

Once all the responses are entered into Survey Monkey, it generates this result:

From the results, you will want to make simple recommendations that will provide the foundation for creating the actual strategic plan.

Recommendation: Investigate potential new programming and roll out process.

The Interview Survey Question is:

The Nature Center’s entrance provides a strong sense of arrival.

  • Strongly Agree
  • Agree
  • Disagree
  • Strongly Disagree
  • Don’t Know

From the results, you will want to make simple recommendations that will provide the foundation for creating the actual strategic plan.

Recommendations: Utilize Bay Front Development to help improve entrance.  Investigate different options for entering the Nature Center (bike/walk path, move parking lot, utilize small trams).
